The Chesapeake Experience Responds to Educational Needs
The Chesapeake Experience has always offered programs for young children but when participants started voicing their disappointment of no longer being able to join in on the fun due to age, the Chesapeake Experience realized it needed to create opportunities for other youths. A new partnership with the Watermen’s Museum created a camp for teens that incorporates ecology and history with kayaking and other fun activities. The camp is available for ages 12- 15. For those of ages 15-18, week long internships provide a unique experience. Interns perform a variety of tasks including teaching and inspiring children. Interns gain valuable work experience that also looks great on college applications!
The Chesapeake Experience also has educational programs specifically for teachers. Over the past four years, teachers have been able to participate in a four day program, learning about the local environment, but now they can also utilize a 10 day program to explore the eastern shore and venture outside of Hampton Roads. These unique experiences provide teachers a way to continue to learn and create inspiring lessons for their classrooms.

Other kayak tours are available to anyone who would like an entertaining way of learning about our rivers, bays, shorelines, and wildlife. According to the Executive Director, Jill Bieri, one of their goals is to inspire a personal connection with our natural surroundings. When you gain that personal connection, you tend to care more, you tend to take ownership. You don’t have to be a scientist or be able to explain the causes and effects of excess nutrients in our waters in order to have that connection. You simply need to appreciate it.
